22 year-old Christine McFadden”s life changed forever when her stepfather did something unconscionably cruel to her. During an argument, 53 year-old Robert Sioleski did something that disfigured Christine forever.
Her stepfather threw a cup of acid on her face during an argument. She was so young whenever the incident happened and she had no defense.
Robert got into a screaming match with Christine, then he suddenly produced a cup of what seemed to be sulfuric acid. He tossed it on her face and when she began fleeing, he chased her through the house with it.
Ever since the brutal attack, Christine has been working as an activist. She is trying to build up others who were victims of domestic violence and letting them know they don”t have to live in fear.
Robert was convicted of first-degree assault and sentenced to 24 years in state prison. Terrorizing Christine wasn”t his first offense. In 1990, he was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment for holding Christine”s infant half-sister at knifepoint during a fight with his wife.
Robert was at Christine”s house because he was searching for his estranged wife. When he couldn”t find her, her took his rage out on Christine.
I try to enjoy life as much as I can, said McFadden, now a mother of two. But Im always in constant fear of whats going to happen.
Despite her fears, McFadden has become an overwhelmingly strong voice for domestic violence awareness, said Renee Fillette, executive director of Grace Smith House Inc. in Poughkeepsie.
McFadden and Gap Inc. will both be honored at Grace Smiths 2013 Women of Grace Awards on Oct. 24.
