Two Artists Pair Up To Create Some Mind-Bending Art On The Beach

By  |

Imagine walking along the beach and suddenly finding what looks like a portal to another dimension. That”s what might happen if you were walking along New Zealand”s Okains Bay, thanks to artist duo Constanza Nightingale and David Rendu. Together, the two artists have created some impressive large-scale images in the sand, many of which create the illusion of being three-dimensional.

Hole to Another Dimension was created by carefully arranging shells to make the final piece look like an opening.

Nightingale and Rendu, who hail from Chile and France, respectively, also founded the artists” group 3DSD, which sees artists from all over the world gather to create these large, space-bending sand drawings.

The pieces are created using sticks and rakes, which are then used to simply draw into the sand. The images are, of course, impermanent, and are eventually destroyed by the wind and the tide. To the artists, the temporary nature of the art is a way to reflect on the fact that everything in life exists in a state of change. “The artworks provide an acute awareness of time, and act as a metaphor for the brevity of life,” Nightingale explains.

You”ll also see that people like to stop and play with these images, often posing with them to further enhance the illusions. The artists are okay with that. They see the public”s interest as a way to bring people together through art.

Nightingale, Rendu, and fellow 3DSD founder Jamie Harkins are also artists in other fields; they create paintings and sculptures when they”re not creating beach art. You can see more of their sand creations on the 3DSD Facebook page, as well as on Nightingale”s website and Rendu”s Facebook. The next time you”re walking along the beach, try making some sand art of your own!
