These Best Friends Had Enough Of City Life, So They Created Their Own Dream Homes
When the hectic city life of Austin got to be too much for them, this group of friends had to figure out what to do next. They knew that living in the city wasn”t for them anymore, but none of them were ready to completely remove themselves from the area. They eventually decided on a one-of-a-kind, custom-built compromise.
The plan came to be named Llano Exit Strategy, a series of four cabins and a common area that the four couples could share.
The compound was designed by architect Matt Garcia with the intent of disturbing the natural beauty as little as possible.
Instead of city streets, the residents can now take in this view.
The cabins sit on a scenic piece of land along Texas”s Llano River. They were designed to minimally impact the surrounding environment, and deal with the hot, dry Texas climate. The buildings feature galvanized metal siding to reflect the strong sun and keep the interiors cool, and are lined with spray foam insulation to keep their temperatures stable. The sloped roofs catch rainwater and collect it in large cisterns alongside each cabin.
Besides the practical concerns, the minimalist design of the cabins also lets the natural beauty of the land shine.
Inside, each cabin is like a studio apartment, with a shared bedroom and living room, and a full bathroom in the back. Concrete floors, plywood walls, and industrial accents give it a rustic but modern charm. The kitchen, a larger living space, and guest area are located in the common building.
Each cabin measures around 350 square feet. It”s not huge, but the airiness of the design makes it seem more spacious.
In all, each couple spent about $40,000 for the project.

Right now, the couples still live and work in Austin, but Llano Exist Strategy provides them with a perfect weekend and holiday retreat.
