We”ve already detailed some pretty crazy gravestones here at ViralNova, but the Ruriden columbarium in Tokyo is definitely the trippiest. With thousands of LED lights, and even personal key cards that allow grievers into the mausoleum, this technological graveyard is perfect for the mortal who wants to be buried in Disney”s Epcot Center. It”s essentially the world”s first cemetery that could also be a rave.
While this facility might look pretty grim on the outside, the inside of this mausoleum is a little more, shall we say, lively? Oh, the irony.
This is not a Daft Punk music video. This is a cemetery. This is where dead relatives come to party.
The Ruridren features 2,046 alters, each one represented by a light-up Buddha that protects the ashes of the deceased.
The cemetery is operated by the monks of the Koukokuji Buddhist Temple in Tokyo, who are clearly the grooviest monks in Japan. And of all time ever.
It took two years to build the facility. Most of this time was presumably spent seeing if it”d be possible to play Tetris on the altars.
The ashes are stored in the mausoleum, but then after 33 years, they get buried below the Ruriden to let other people join the disco-death-dojo.
As you can see, these Buddhas have reached enLIGHTenment. (Sorry…)
Only 600 altars are currently in use, and 300 have already been reserved. So get on it, afterlife swingers, this party is filling up!
It may be a little too brazen for a traditional funeral, but I”d honestly prefer to have my loved ones pay their respects to me in this laser-tomb rather than in some field. Plus, the key cards would keep teenagers from coming to illegally drink on my grave…even though this place basically looks like the perfect place for that.
